Weed seedbank diversity and sustainability indicators for simple and more diverse cropping systems

چکیده
Storkey and Neve (2018) hypothesised that weed seedbank diversity could be used as an indicator of agroecosystem sustainability, with cropping systems associated higher being more agronomically environmentally sustainable than those lower diversity. We evaluated their hypothesis using multiple years empirical data collected from a long-term field experiment in Iowa, USA, life cycle assessment models parameterised experiment. found diversifying 2-year maize–soyabean rotation two additional crop phases, oat lucerne, to form 4-year (a) increased Simpson's index for species the soil seedbank, while (b) increasing maize soyabean productivity, (c) maintaining total energy production profitability, (d) reducing herbicide-related aquatic toxicity, fossil consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, damage human health due fine particulate matter, discharge sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus. Increased biomass greater occurred within lucerne phases sequence did not result loss control rotation. suggest there was no cause-and-effect relationship between improved sustainability agronomic, economic environmental dimensions, all these responses were driven parallel manner by system diversification. Consequently, may indeed useful indicator. Further evaluation this is warranted.

Sustainability and integrated weed management in Australian winter cropping systems: a bioeconomic analysis
Economic evaluations of the benefits of integrated weed management often only consider the benefits of management in the crop phase, and ignore the impact of rotational options. In particular, non-crop phases such as annual and perennial pasture phases can have a substantial impact upon weed population dynamics and economic returns. Moreover, extended perennial pasture phases are being promoted...
متن کاملWeed control in organic horticultural cropping systems
A review of organic growers' concerns about weeds is presented and several issues that may ease those concerns are highlighted. The underlying principles of organic weed management (OWM) are briefly discussed and results from organic grower surveys regarding weed management practices in organic horticultural cropping are presented. The most common weeds encountered by organic growers, often tho...
متن کاملSelecting sustainability indicators for urban energy systems
Literature on the measurement of urban sustainability shows that no single indicator framework is appropriate for all applications. Consequently practitioners must consider the intended goals of indicator use and carefully choose metrics to maximize their relevance and effectiveness. The study of urban energy systems demonstrates these issues, as energy use is integral to many dimensions of urb...
